Superintendent's Message
Dear Residents,
It has not been an easy year. The economy has spiraled downward, nuclear proliferation is on our minds again, instability in the Middle East prevails, and the weather fails to cooperate as we head into summer. Here in Babylon we have had our difficulties too. We had concerns about the security of children in and out of our schools and had those worries confirmed when we analyzed the results of the prevention needs assessment we administered to our students last spring. Our issues ranged from Swine flu to creating a budget that would sustain excellent educational programs while keeping costs down. But most difficult of all was the loss of one of our students to a tragic mistake.
As we all move into the more carefree days of summer, I ask that you not let the life of Garrett Quedens go unremembered. At the age of 14 he, like your children, had dreams of growing to adulthood, happy and healthy. But his dreams will not be realized. I hope you will consider having your child honor him by attending a mass in his memory on Wednesday, July 15th on what would have been his 15th birthday. The mass will be held at 9:00 a.m. at St. Joseph’s R.C. Church.
On May 22nd we held a student event entitled, “Action against Distraction”. The purpose was to help our teen drivers understand the dangers that exist when distractions occur while driving. Texting and speaking on cell phones, friends in the car, and just the occurrences on the road present challenges to all drivers. The 100 days between Memorial Day and Labor Day are the deadliest for teen drivers. Please take frequent opportunities to remind the teen driver in your home about safe driving strategies.
As a 36 year veteran educator I would be remiss if I did not comment on the importance of reading in your child’s life. As difficult as it is to get some kids to read, it is a wonderful gift from you to them. Whether it be the newspaper, a magazine, or a book, print material is very important to have in your home. The Babylon Public Library has wonderful summer programs and you can take advantage of borrowing recommended summer reading books from our own Junior-Senior High School library. It is fun to read the same book at the same time and have regular discussions - create your own family book club!
On behalf of all of us here in the district, I wish you a safe and satisfying summer.
Till next time,
Ellen Best-Laimit Superintendent of Schools
